The great fish-hook of the Hawaiian god Maui is called Manai ikalanai. Legend has it that Maui created the Hawaiian Islands through use of trickery. Maui had taken his brothers on a fishing expedition whereby he pretended to snag a big fish. Excitedly, the brothers paddled faster and faster to pull up his line and get the fish and failed to notice the Island starting to rise and form behind them.
